Let's Get Registered!

Post  BackyardBirdGardner on 8/9/2011, 2:29 pm

I see you. Yes, you, the guy/gal hiding behind the computer. You likely have a question or comment that is killing you to make. I would like to encourage you to make it today!

When I look at the forum's numbers, they are great. The forum continues to grow. However, I still notice that the "guests" outnumber the "members" at any given time by 4 to 1, sometimes even 5 to 1. No one is putting me up to asking this. I've just never seen anyone ask before. Let's end this summer on a high note! If you've been debating registering, just jump in with both feet. You likely know the forum. You likely know we are nice people. We are always looking to meet more gardeners, specifically SFG'ers, across the country....and world.

Introduce yourself when you take that leap. We would all like to give you a proper welcome, especially if you've been following our chatter this season. It's really only fair to yourself to jump in and start offering your opinions and comments.

What do you say? Hop off the sidelines, let us get to know you, too, and let's have some more fun through the fall and winter!

P.S. Yes, you. The one that just ducked behind the monitor. I see you looking at me. I'm inviting YOU to join us and help us grow our forum that has given so many of us the encouragement to turn our thumbs from brown to green.

BBG - lots of times the "guests" are actually bots from things like google or yahoo... Don't let the numbers mislead you. I see it on another forum I am a part of where there will be MANY more guests than active members (we are a pretty small community - there are less than 50 of us who post regularly).

Quite true, maybe Boffer can see how many of those lurk here waiting for it’s catch of the day be it an Email address, name, www address, tele # or whatever information it was programmed to retrieve then relay back to it’s master.

Understood, but how many new members have we seen that admit they were long-time lurkers? They are out there. Let's not ruin the message of the original post.

I lurked for a while(about a year), and I can say getting involved will get you more information than just sitting by the sidelines.

I, too, "lurked" for a while before joining! BBG is right! Joining doesn't require you to make posts. In fact, I was fairly "shy" about posting for a long time having joined back in April. But after 4 months, I'm finally starting to post more. Take your time to post on topics about which you feel comfortable or have questions, and I'm sure the members will give you the same warm welcome and wealth of knowledge on specific questions, that they gave me! Smile Join today! Smile

I agree that everyone should post, but, folks will go to a forum for info and if they can get the info without joining, they will just get the info and run!

Everyone(guests and bots) can read the whole site, they just cannot post.

I guess that it depends on whether the forum folks in charge want to share the info with all or not. (maybe there should some areas of the forum that are for members only)

The big search engine bots identify themselves when they are here. To be honest, I never thought about unidentified harvesting bots. Just for grins, I posted the scenario at forumotion. I'll report back if anything pops up.

I have had two test e-mail addresses posted on the forum for more than a year. This forum is the only place I've posted them. The only e-mails I receive are from myself when I test them to make sure they still work! If there are bots hanging around intent on collecting e-mails, they're not doing a very good job!

Admins here get a surprising amount of contact from 'guests' asking gardening questions. Some people feel too shy to post. One reason for forum categories that aren't even about gardening, is to provide comfort zones for members where they might feel more knowledge about a topic other than gardening, and would be more inclined to participate.

I would like you to try two things. One, log out and look at the index page as a guest. There's forums missing!

Two, near the bottom of the index page, right under the international forums, on the right, is a link that says "delete the forum cookies". Click on it. You will then see the pop-up that first timers to the forum see. It lists the forum features and functions that are available to members and not to guests. After reading that, who wouldn't want to join?! Razz

That's the best we have until middlemamma poses for a sfg calendar! Wink

Boff, you were doing great until right here....

LOL. I was actually learning something until you tossed my brain right back into the gutter where it lives. Now you got me thinking very sadistically. Calendars, coffee mugs, wallpapers, etc. And, not just M-squared. Any male, female, or veggie could be fair game. Your extra long carrot springs to mind. Wink

In all seriousness, a calendar of members' SFGs would be pretty cool. Although, I doubt new people would sign up for just that.

I agree that being a member vs a lurker has many benefits! I was a lurker here and on my couponing site but your knowledge/understanding doesn't really seem to increase til you join and ask questions.

Bof: thanks for almost making me spit Pepsi on this netbook! LOL , I can't wait til she sees this thread! LMBO!!!

Quite a few times I have found that I have somehow gotten signed out and am listed as a guest til I want to do something that a guest can't do. So the stats may be a little skewed.

I know when I get an email notification about a thread that most of the times when I click on the link in the email it just takes me here as a guest, which is the only time since my first visit when I jumped in with both feet and registered right away that I've been here as a guest.
