Another Virginian checking in

I used to lurk on the old forum, digesting what I could from a gardener based out of the middle peninsula.

Me? I'm in Alexandria. During the past several years, we have had maintained a small raised bed, primarily herbs and peppers. I wanted to expand into veggie gardening and appreciated Mel Bartholomew's engineer's approach to intensive gardening .

In this initial foray into SFG methods, I restricted myself to a single 4x4 experimental bed focused on salad greens and veggies that my kids enjoy. I am interested to see what works and what doesn't. This year's experiments include snap peas, french green beans, cos and leaf lettuce, chard, tomatoes, bell and hot peppers, carrots, radishes, and ground cherries.

A special focus for me is varmint control. I live in a neighborhood cursed by stray cats.

Hello and welcome to the forums jiro looks like your off to a great start with veggies a simple costless olution for the kitties get some old dried holly leaves and spread them on the garden lightly the kittys wont step into it once they realize they prick theyre little paws it has worked for me in the past havent had any trouble this year (yet) be sure to check out your regional forum to meet with others in your area and hardiness zone there are alot of knowledgable and creative people here and we all try to help eachother and we love pictures so feel free to post up pictures and any questions you might have
