Can I plant anything now?

Post  amy17green on 8/13/2011, 9:39 pm

I have 8 12x12 spaces from potatoes and 5 12x6 in another bed. Is there anything I can plant now? What could I plant and have winter over? I want to keep it veggies/fruit- I have enough flowers!

I've had okay success with my first garden.

Potatoes did okay- they were small but very yummy

Beans- not many out of 3 squares

Cucumber- 1 and then nothing, but coming on again

tomatoe-2 started, large plant, but not much activity...

peas- delicious, but not many

onions- died!

beets-doing well, but not ready

strawberry- still coming, ate 2 this week!

brocolli- okay- kids ate it out of the garden

Amy, did you plant bush beans or pole beans? Bush Beans mature pretty much all at once, while pole beans take a bit longer to start producing, but the will produce until the first frost. I planted 9 per square of bush beans in 8 squares and I have harvested over 5 lbs in the past 8 days. I also planted sugar snap peas, not english type peas, and because you eat pod and all, you get a bigger harvest for the number of plants.

For Fall plantings, you might consider carrots, onions, garlic all of which will over winter most places. Kohlrabi can be planted up until about 1 month before the first frost. They will not overwinter, but can take some light frost, similar to cabbage, and can give you a nice late harvest.

Seems like it would be more than fine to plant cooler season veggies again. However, check your autumn frost date. It may actually be too late to put broccoli or cauliflower out again. Lettuces and spinaches, maybe peas, would likely do well, especially as the weather cools.
