Watch out-we're having a heat wave-stuff is visibly growing in half a day-another week or two and you'd be toast for sure!

I'll be taking pictures first thing in the morning, but then I'll have to run to town to get a cable to transfer them to my PC. Long story; don't ask; at least my camera is here.

OK...Here I go...I had several giant carrots that I planted in my regular sfg that has a top hat, they ranged from 10-12 inches.

Then there was the one giant carrot that I made a special sfg for, and it turned out to be 19 inches counting the skinny root that me and boffer agreed to measure.

And one unusual one

I'm naming last years dancing carrot, "Ginger" and this year lets just say I grew Fred Astaire.

I'm dying with the blackout of the "parts." I thought that in the first pic, and you didn't disappoint in the last pic....lmao. Not bad, Fred. Freud, again, would be proud.

With Boffer's weather complaints this year, we are about to see how much we can actually trust the guy in the face of competition....

Re: LONGEST CARROT TIME!

Post  boffer on 8/20/2011, 7:17 pm

Am I late for the show? I was working on my 2014 heating bill.

This was the only extra deep box that ended up working out for me; it's about 40 inches tall.

Once again, I think Josh must have switched seeds before he mailed them to me. J/K Here they are then; not much to write home about.

Spoiler:

The blocks of wood are at the end of the taproots, because I didn't know how well they would show up. My longest carrot is 16½ inches, and therefore I concede to this years Master of Carrots, Josh.

My largest circumference is over 6½ inches.

I've never had a carrot split open like this before. Inconsistent watering?

And as for my unusual carrot: let's just say that the part that needed editing was considerably larger than Josh's! Razz
Spoiler:

This has been fun, and Josh won fair and square. But let me be the first to say that the final products of the contest were a dud! Seriously!

If anyone has ideas and would like to participate in a similar contest of sorts next year, speak up. As loser, it's only fair that I provide Josh's seeds for the contest next year. ROFL!

Congratulations Josh and thank you both Boffer and Josh for a fun thread.

Boffer I had a carrot split just like that, just one carrot in a square of 15 other carrots. Who knows why one would split and not the others.

Since you guys have your longest carrot contest, maybe next year it would be cute if us girls could compete for the biggest and roundest....bells --

You Are imagining big round bell peppers right ?

Thanks, Patti. But once I got behind due to a cool spring, there was no catching up. I should have wrapped my box in electric heating blankets!

Don't forget that the Master of Carrots has been experimenting with other large cultivars. He may have some ideas to get this going.

I can't wait to see what the rules will be for judging melons.... Shocked

Actually...those are not my melons. What a Face I posted that picture awhile back (very innocently, I might add) when someone posted a question about vertical watermelon supports. It was the guys who made comments!

I have never grown watermelons or cantaloupes in my SFG. With only two of us, I'm afraid we won't be able to eat them before they go bad. But for a challenge, I might try!

I'm in for a mellon contest if it is sugar babies or cantaloupes no room for full size water melons in this tiny garden. I've never had luck in the past but who knows. As far as melons are concerned I don't agree that more than a mouthfull is a waste.

Fall Contest Suggestion, perhaps open this up to all guys and gals with the theme, Who's got the Biggest Brassica? The diameter of brocolli could be measured. Just a thought. I would certainly give it a shot if anyone else wants to play.

Works for me! I have a few broccoli plants that survived the rabbit but stunted in the heat - so now they will be my fall crop! I am just now getting kohlrabi from my May planting. They are so cute - just smaller than a tennis ball. Hopefully the broccoli that are still alive will eventually try to form a head.....

Post  llama momma on 8/21/2011, 1:02 pm

Ok Goosegirl You're On! and thank you for wanting to play!

I think we should move this contest out of the "longest carrot time"

topic. I am going to announce the new title called

"Fall Contest - Show us your Biggest Brassica, Broccoli!

Please help me with any of your ideas, ok?
