It's already almost Fall?

Post  middlemamma on Sat 27 Aug 2011, 2:10 pm

How in the H-E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS did that happen?

It just got to be summer!

Just wanted to share my sadness with all my friends here that will understand. I still have things going strong but chances are in the next 5 weeks we will have a frost...and everything will be nearly over for me. I am just getting red tomatoes...I haven't harvested a single cuke...out of 5 plants....and I have corn coming out my ears! ROFL! How does that happen....I couldn't grow a squash but I have a better crop of corn that every gardener in the county!?!

My edamamme is JUST now flowering so I expect it will get killed by frost JUST BEFORE I get a bean off of it! Ahhh.....such is life in the great north....I just have to keep reminding myself that I don't have the bugs they have in the south...that soothes my pain.

Well off to the garden to do some clean up, harvest and such....ALL my garlic is just now ready to pull....Smile 25 squares of it....or some ungodly number like that...

I feel your pain! My garden is so scraggly right now and it makes me sad. The only thing that's really doing well are the tomatoes and the pole beans. The peas are done, my zucchini died the other day, the carrots are almost all pulled, the bush beans are long gone, the peppers are just starting to flower again after dropping them all in the heat we had.

I'm comforting myself with the reminder that I have a fall garden on its way. I have bush beans planted, some more peas, lots of lettuce, and I have some other fall plant seeds on the way. I have a little more time than you do, but nevertheless, it's creeping up fast.

MM my tomatoes are just starting to come in as well. Squash didn't do great, cukes have been good but I planted about 40 plants in 4 squares thinking some would fail, but they did well as long as they got a drink every day. The eggplants have been good for about a week. This is our lot in zone 5, summer harvest comes fast and furious and would continue but for the frost. You will get more food in the next month. Keep the faith! Very Happy

Hi CAMP!!!! I know I always have you as my zone buddy to commiserate with! Smile

I went out and picked corn, beans, peppers and the first of the cherry toms today. I have a pumpkin vine taking over the whole garden...I LOVE IT! It's a jungle out there!

Gonna update the Middlemamma 2nd try thread with pics.

Not sure I am gonna fuss with a full fall garden this year. Will definitely plant my garlic and potato onions, and may throw in some kohlrabi cause I really liked those. I just started back to school full time and I think the garden is gonna have to take a backseat for the fall till I get my school legs back under me again!

Plus the fall will be nuts with Caleb (my 10 year old) playing tackle football this year. It would figure THE one sport I absolutely cannot stand he shows promise in. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes His practices are 5 days a week for 2 hours...good study hour for me eh? If I can figure out how to get dinner made while I do that! LOL Plus a game every Saturday at 3. YES 3! Right smack dab in the middle of the friggin day! OYE VAY!

MM can't you stave off the frost with a clear plastic, or row cover? The edamame sets fast if it is the same kind I grew so I am keeping my fingers crossed for you. It might be close depending on what Ma nature has in store.

P.S if you can save your edamame it is so worth it. Like all veg. they are so much better fresh from the garden.

We all get a bit sad when fall comes and winter is not far away... I sympathize with you!
Our first frost is normally around end october, but it can be earlier or later ( even as late as december). There is no telling when it strikes.

So, I am acting as if nothing is the matter... planting and even sowing.
I do not like to kill anything living, but in this case I had to buy stuff to kill the slugs. They eat it and they do not survive their last meal...
It is called 'Escar-go'( bad joke...) and it does not harm birds, hedgehogs and other creatures living in the garden. That is the only reason why this is acceptable to me...
It is just them or my lettuce....grrrrr!
