I've watched Food, Inc. At this point in my life, I'm not ready to watch any others, lol. My DH and I are truck drivers so we end up eating a whole lot of frankenfood.

As far as our .gov "protecting" us from Monsanto and other similar companies. Ain't gonna happen. The head of the FDA is Michael Taylor, a former Monsanto Executive and "golden boy".

A large part of why I want to garden using SFG has to do with all of this. My DH and I need to get healthier, and eating fresh fruits and veggies from our own garden will go a long way to accomplishing that goal!

@wncsohn you'er doing what you can and that's important. I have joined the Farmageddon group on the net and FB they have a letter asking that Michael Taylor be ousted which I signed if you are interested.

Shannon,

Thanks for the heads up on that. I wasn't aware of it and will definately look into it!

And yes, we're working on alot of things right now. Slowly but surely we're getting things accomplished!

@kurango wrote:Food Inc. Changed me, for sure! I immediately wanted to know if I was zoned for chickens. I never found out. I had always grown tomatoes, and flowers, plus I have two good sized berry patches, (raspberries, blackberries, and boysenberries) but it made me revisit the thought of a vegetable garden. Which I started last year after seeing Food Inc."
Go to BackyardChickens.com and check their "L.O.R.E." section. They may have your city/town on the list already, or you can find out how to check your local laws, and whether you can have chickens, or have to work harder at it. I love 'my girls!'

Yep can't afford the $500.00 vairance fee. For me better not to eat eggs, I love chickens and would still have 3 if I could to share eggs with those who could.

Shannon, I can't keep chickens either. Have you been to Localharvest.org and seen if there is a farmers market near you? I get the most beautiful eggs from mine!

Re: "Food Inc."

Post  NHGardener on 9/24/2011, 7:57 pm

So glad you all brought this up because I've checked Food Inc. out of the library a couple times but never got around to watching it. I even thought about getting it again yesterday, but put it off. So Monday for sure!

And the reason I got re-interested in watching it is because JOEL SALATIN, who was featured in Food, Inc., as well as in Farmageddon, just came to Portsmouth, NH and spoke (for free) and I missed it because I couldn't find a durn parking place!!! I drove around and around and finally said - oh well, I'll catch it on audio stream sometime. If you haven't read his books or heard him, just do a search for him on youtube. He makes me want to dive right into farming altogether, his methods are so super-cool.

But there's no way I could watch the graphic animal clips. I have chickens, and when the salmonella outbreak broke in the news and they started showing those poultry factories, I could barely stand it. And then when the power went out down south somewhere (NC?) and like 10,000 chickens died in a poultry factory... UGH. Can't take it. They are such nice birds.

NHG, there's definitely a scene in Food, Inc. you'll want to not watch. You might listen to it but turn away from the screen.

I've heard Joel speak a couple times. Most recently I heard him at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Those college students were on their feet applauding and getting fired up to farm sustainably. Amazing.

Huh. My daughter goes to Vanderbilt. Was that this year? If he goes back there, I'll have to encourage her to go.

I'm listening right now to the audio from his recent stop here. Inspiring.
