Post  Wag on 10/25/2011, 10:39 pm

H E L L O ----- I'm new to this SFG thing. Looking for a lot of info. Just got the books. Played around with a 3 ft. X 12 ft. box for the last 2 years with lil success and fixing to get serious about this SFG thing. (my soil was the problem) Planing to build 4 (four) 3 ft. X 12 ft. boxes over the winter and have ready for spring planting. Been reading the forums and all the info on this site and THANKS. I'm located in Lutcher, Louisiana (about) midway beween Baton Rouge and New Orleans zone 8/9. THANKS again and looking forward to becoming a member. Jason from Louisiana

Welcome to the forum. The secret to SFG is Mel's Mix. You can read about it here:
http://squarefoot.creatingforum.com/t7452-mel-s-mix-how-strong-is-your-backbone

And Chapter 5 in the ALL NEW SFG book is a must read to understand what SFG is all about.

Happy gardening

Welcome to the forums and to SFG fellow Louisianian!

May I suggest going to the LSU AgCenter for general information about our area and specifically to read the Lousiana Vegetable Planting Guide for planting dates and known good varieties of veggies.

There's a ton of information on that site pertinent to our area, including herbs, common diseases and pests.

Welcome aboard, Wag. Where I come from WAG means Wild-A**-Guess. I look forward to hearing more from you as you get comfortable.

Definitely grab a copy of the book and read it. You won't be disappointed. And, given your location, I expect to hear from you through the winter months. Us Yanks have to live vicariously through somebody...may as well be all you Southern Sympathizers with great cool seasons. (Of course, I make jokes about political affiliation. I mean absolutely nothing by it.)

WAG

Always nice to have another new member.

As has already been noted, read your ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING for great info on Mel's Mix which will be your soil replacement. The link Boffer provided is also a great resource on what to use and how to select ingredients for your Mel's Mix.

Unmutual's local resources from LSU will also be very helpful in determining which varieties of veggies do well in your area and help you with your best planting dates.

Enjoy
