Welcome JesicaW !
You found yourself a wonderful resource here on this forum. Be sure to read the All New Square Foot Gardening book. It has everything in it to get you started. Aren't you in "Llama Country"? My mini herd of llamas have grandparent geneology going right back to South America. If you are near any llamas or alpacas you might very well have a fabulous source of manure if you choose to make your own compost heap. Anyway, welcome again and enjoy this great forum!

Welcome Jesica!

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Gardening in Lima?

Post  rgrunewald on 1/27/2012, 2:10 pm

Hi there! I am coming to Lima in a month and was asked to evaluate some slum neighborhoods for urban gardening potential. I am not a horticulture expert, just a seasoned Wisconsin gardener going on a medical mission in Peru. Long story short - what have you learned so far with your garden? I am thinking that any 'garden' will have to be using compost in pots/containers, protected from the sun part of the day, and watered twice a day. Arid, coastal Lima doesn't sound like exactly my kind of gardening! What are you finding out?

Thanks a bunch!

R Grunewald

Welcome Jesica, I'm looking into growing some semi tropical perennial vegies and fruits. I have a passion vine that is 2yrs. old now and hope it will fruit this year. Do you have any sugestions? I live in zone 9. I know you will love gardening nothing tastes as good as home grown food. I have Datail Pepper and Seminole pumpkin seeds to share, if you are interested PM me. I have a great interest in american vegies. So many of the common ones we grow are european or asian. I enjoy them but it seems to like it might be better to grow plants that were here before even the gardeners. ;-)
