Cross Pollination

Post  momstitch on 3/30/2010, 7:01 pm

Do melons and winter squash cross pollinate? At this point they are next to each other in my garden plan.

I think, now don't quote me on this, that it doesn't matter if something cross pollinates unless you are planning on saving the seeds. That's what I heard about tomatoes

According to Iowa State University members of the curcubit family....vining melons are self polinating and don't cross polinate. Each variety has both male and female flowers on the vines.
From experience I can tell you that tomatos and peppers will cross polinate. I got spicy tomatoes one year by planting cayenne peppers amongst the tomato vines.
