Awesome!

I am looking forward to meeting other people doing SFG here in Hawaii, and sharing what local plants do well.

Hawaii Symposium was Great!

Post  punaluuSFG on 5/24/2010, 2:32 pm

The Hawaii Symposium was great! I really enjoyed networking with others. Came away with lots of great tips and suggestions and couldn't wait to implement some of them. For example, I went to town right after our graduation and bought termite blocks and shields and installed them that evening as a way to keep slugs and ants out of my SFG. (Thanks for sharing Glenn.) The additional height of the beds is nice too. My low maintenance gardening just got even easier!

Sorry to butt in, but what's this tip about termite shields keeping slugs out? I hate those buggers and am always looking for new weapons in my war on slugs.

Here in Hawaii these termite concrete blocks and shields are sold at most all hardware stores. Not sure if you have them on the mainland. The blocks are about 5" wide by 3" in height. The shield is placed facing down, with a second one facing up with water or oil in it to also prevent ants getting to the raised bed. I'll see if I can attach a photo. (first time attempt)

Another sfg table top gardener!

glad you\'re here to the forum, punaluuSFG, thanks for the tip and pic. Are you a certified teacher now?

Why garden on the ground when you can do it standing up?!
You can find more reasons to try a table top by clicking #2 in my sig.

E Komo Mai (welcome) PunaluuSFG!

I am regretting my absence at the Symposium!

Thanks for posting the termite solution!! The boxes with plywood bottoms, in my garden were infested with termites!! I was so discouraged that I haven't fixed them just yet.

Were any other specific tips for Hawaiian SFG shared at the Symposium?

boffer & OahuSFG, mahalo for the welcome to the forum. I wanted to reply sooner, but I've been busy helping my son this week with his Eagle Scout project. He and I both got certified at the Hawaii Symposium. His project, which he just finished today, was to build and install two SFG boxes for a retirement community. They look great!

Besides Scouts from his Troop, several of the certified trainers from the Hawaii Symposium made it out to support his project also. It was the first community activity for our newly formed Hawaii SFG Association. In two weeks we'll be at one of the local Elementary Schools helping them with their garden. Continuing to spread the word about SFG!

Here's a pic of his Eagle Project.

My congrats to your son. Not only has he been learning sfg, I see someone has taught him some good carpentry principles!

Your son is certainly welcome to join the forum too. We have another young man by the name of Josh who is a certified teacher. He lives in IL. and is 15.

Tell us more about the new Ha SFG Asso. What do you have planned?

Happy gardening

I'd like to hear more about the Hawaii SFG group as well. Several factors kept me from attending the recent symposium; I am sad to have missed out.

(You should be so proud of your son! The SFG looks great, and I love that he helped seniors with the project. Well done!)

That is so awesome what you and your son are doing!

I am also interested in your group! There is a Agriculture/FFA teacher out at Campbell High school that is interested in SFG. If you son would like to get in touch with him, send me a pm. It would be great to have SFG in Hawaii's educational programs!
