vermiculite and mushroom compost in central MD

Post  fmneuman on 3/30/2010, 10:32 pm

Southern States in Mt.Airy, MD has a steady supply of coarse vermiculite available. On Thursday, April 1, they are getting in "a bunch" of large (4 cuft) bags. Also found a bag at Meadow's Farm Garden Center in Frederick, MD.

Mushroom Compost avail. from Winding Creek Premium Mulch Products in Mt. Airy 301-829-1285. Sells bulk only but sold me 1/2 of a 1 cu yd load for $10. That's a lot of compost!

Hello KaLioMele,

You probably already know this but when I called SS on Thurs. they told me the verm was backordered and would not be in until next Thurs. at the earliest. However, I received a call from them on Fri. saying it actually did arrive. When I stopped in today they only had one bag of medium grade so they refunded my $. I left my name on their list for the coarse variety when it arrives. The lady told me she instructed the company to send her whatever they had when she was told it was backordered. I hope they know what they are talking about!? I suggest you call and put your name on their list, it might help(?) 301-829-0110.

On the more positive side, a place called Grandfathers Garden Center on Phelps Luck Rd. in Columbia (off Rt.108) does have several bags of coarse verm in stock but they are not full 4 cuft bags. They are labeled 1.5 bushels and appear to be 2-3 cuft, but it is coarse. Down side is they are $25, ouch!

FYI If you need compost, different types are tough to find. The Takoma Park-Silver Spring Co-op has earthworm casting compost and the gentleman in Mt. Airy with mushroom compost is very nice.

Good luck. My first tiny sprouts of beets, carrots, spinach, cauliflower just poked through the top of the soil today. I feel like a new mother, very exciting!

Thanks for letting me know that Grandfather's in Columbia has vermiculite. You are right, it is about 2 cubic feet, coarse, and $25. But you saved me gas money and time.

I wish i had found this thread earlier. Southern States in Upper Marlboro told me they haven't been able to get vermiculite forever due to a fire at the manufacturer plant. The guy didn't even try to quote me or place it on backorder. I ended up ordering from a place in VA and paid a TON in shipping for 8cu ft.
