Compost bin made of garden fencing?

Post  gwennifer on 11/29/2011, 5:30 pm

Hello fellow SFG'ers and compost enthusiasts! So in my never-ending quest to tidy up and beautify, I'm considering purchasing these garden fence panels for my compost. Their dimensions are such that four of them in a square, when full up to the decorative part on top, would hold a 3'x3'x3' pile. Think it will work? I'm just wondering if the holes are too big at ~2"x4".

They would work for me... what are they made of?

the holes in our compost bin are 2x4 and work fine. that's really pretty!! That would be good too, if they're hinged so you can turn the pile easily! Nice find!! cheers cheers

Thanks for the replies!

They are made from powder coated steel and are available in black or green, in a 2-pack (as shown) from Lowe's for $21.97. My local Lowe's has them (in the outdoor garden section), and you can see them on the website here: Lowe's Garden Fence.

Yes, they are hinged and can be placed in any configuration. Five packs (ten panels) will get me a 3-bin system, all connected, and I would use the front panel on each section as a gate so I can get in and turn from one bin to another. I am cancelling my yard debris pick-up service and the savings will ultimately make the whole system pay for itself (albeit, it may take a year or three)!

If you want you could always line the inside of that with hardware cloth with smaller holes. I guess if you put stuff in and too much of it starts falling out, then you could line it.

Thanks TooTall -I figured that much out myself! *LOL* But then I also figured, there was no point in paying that much for a brand new set-up that would have to be rigged to work. Know what I mean? So then I figured (lots of figurin' going on, my brain was getting tired) with all the composters on this forum, surely some people have more "hole-y" compost set-ups than others and could let me know how it works.

Apparently I'm good to go. I'll post a pic when I've got it set up. I cancelled my yard debris service yesterday, and the sun is currently shining so I've got to head out to some neighbors yards and gather more leaves while I've got a chance. Smile

That looks a heck of a lot better than my Hillbilly-like compost bin.

Nice clean lines & attractive .... a conversation piece indeed.

It might be wise to move it away from the fence and wall a foot or so to stop rising damp affecting things or compost bin creepie crawlies getting under the clapboards easily and allow you to clean around the bin as & when needed.

You really want to put food scraps into such a pretty thing? It really does look nice. I'd move it away from the house, too. You're going to want to keep it wet, and I see rot in your future. affraid

Re: Compost bin made of garden fencing?

Post  gwennifer on 12/6/2011, 12:17 pm

Hey, thanks everyone for the compliments and advice. I've been really short on affirmation lately, so it means more than you know.

My bin is farther away from the house and fence then it appears in the picture. I was able to clean around the back and side with a broom after I filled it. Do I need to worry about rot with cement-board siding and with nothing damp actually touching it? My husband made the point about the bugs when he got home. Well, it's certainly easy enough to move. *sigh* I was trying to clean up my view out of the kitchen side window. I'd rather look at a tree/shrub/perennial border than a set of compost bins, even if they are pretty ones. Back to the drawing board...

I'd suggest usually a nine inch gap to prevent rising damp moving up cold walls or wood etc and the same minimum distance to allow air to circulate when things are placed near wood fences or any sort of wall .

Plus if the composter is near to an open window you might regret it because of all sorts of insects deciding to visit you in the home instead of visiting the compost bin.
