No problem, llama momma. That gilhoolie was a fascinating find that I can sure look for now when I scour yard sales, flea markets, etc. My arthritic fingers just can't open jars like they used to and my DH passed on over 20 years ago, so he's not around for jar duty anymore :O(

Here's a gilhoolie that's for sale for $11. Who's going to be the forum guinea pig?!

For another perspective, here's a used one that sold on Ebay last August for $2.25.

Nice to know we can all get our own Gilhoolies, but I am holding out for one as cool looking as Camprn's.

(And I would have thought that a Gilhoolie was the same as a doohickey. Good think I didn't go out and embarrass myself in public.)

I don't have a Gilhoolie yet, but I'm keeping my eyes open for one.

Gilhoolie...gilhoolie...gilhoolie. Now where have I heard that word before?!? It's been bugging me since Friday, and I finally figured it out this morning!!!
It's the name of Lee Marvin's character in Donovan's Reef, my all-time favorite John Wayne movie.

Re: What's your favorite kitchen/garden gadget?

Post  boffer on Sun Dec 11, 2011 3:26 pm

So I dusted off my favorite kitchen gadget and got her going this morning. When she ran out of baking powder, it was the least I could do to make the trip to town to get some for her. When I entered the grocery store, what did I find, but a baking aisle full of men! They were looking at their lists and asking anybody within earshot, 'anybody know where such-and-such is? what is it, anyhow?'

Must be a lot of gadgets baking this morning! Razz

Her forte is baking. Unfortunately, it conflicts with my belt size. Moderation and all that?

My favourite gadget is just a "knife" that I prepare veggies with. It has a nice sharp blade that peels the skins easily. I have several knives in my drawer and I always pick out this one.

It doesn't take up much room and is easy to clean. I have had it for years and years.

I am a deeply committed carbon steel knife kinda gal but last year my son bought me a beautiful Wusthof stainless chef's knife. Two of the best gifts I have ever gotten are fine knives.

Hubby gave me a Wusthof knife last year for Christmas. I really wanted a carbon steel, but the prices were out of our range. I'm a low-tech cook and have VERY few electric appliances, but I love my dehydrator. It preserves absolutely everything for me so I waste none of my garden produce or pastured meat. One day, I'd like a BIG one with an adjustable temperature, but for now, my 20-year-old Kmart blue light special does fine.

I have a difficult time thinking of knives as a gadget. They are more of a basic tool for me.

Gadgets I use so much I keep one in my travel trailer: micro-plane, zester, salad spinner

Electric stuff I like enough to put one in the trailer: hand (stick) blender.

Gadgets I need to replace because I’ve use them so often: nut grinder (tool for turning nutmeg into usable dust) Insta-read thermometer (a probe I press into just about anything, meat, syrup, bbq, coffee water---french press coffee is best when the water is about to boil but not quite there)

Gadgets I covet: probe thermometer with a small receiver that remotely reads the temp for me. My son has one he uses for bbq and loans to me when I make roast or turkey. I love that I can be away from the kitchen and know how close to done something in the oven is. I have a read out thermometer with an alarm but not one with a remote.

Having reviewed the definition of the term and I now understand that there is a mechanical requirement , the gadget, otherwise known as a contraption, whatsis, doohickey, thingamajig, etc... I will update my post about my favorite later today. Very Happy

The mechanical requirement is satisfied by the force, angles, and momentums developed in the relationship between the combination of your forearm, wrist, and hand grasp configuration and the knife itself.

(should I dump that bucket and start over?!)

C'mon kids, no disrespect was meant. I, ME, MYSELF.....I call my knife a tool, something I need at least one of (but have so many more) in the kitchen and at the front door after 10PM. You can call a knife a gadget if you like. Gadgets are the extras that make things easier for me, like a pastry crimper. I can make and crimp pastry without one, but they are kewl to have.....or a cherry pitter...a little knife work and the pit is out but the gadget makes it easier. BUT if you want to, you can call the fingernail on your pinky a gadget that helps you breath easier (my dad does). I know I come across disrespectful, but I really did not intend to be either disrespectful OR snobby....it is what it is and so am I...a woman who wants to get out but is stuck correcting papers all day from kiddo's who want to get out. Wish there was a gadget (or maybe an app) for that.

Debs...having fun putting stuff into categories and fun reading about Gilhoolies while sipping the juice from her Keurig

My wife doesn't beat around the bush sometimes. This weekend I was informed that a certain item in a certain gadget catalog was the cat's meow! Gadgets indeed!

Check out www.chefscatalog.com for all kinds of stuff you don't need!

Just an update (if you've been reading the entire thread) : my favorite gadget cooked 16 dozen cookies yesterday. When she left this morning, she took all of them with her except 6. Not 6 dozen...6 cookies!
