Do you know what this is?

Post  Josh on 12/16/2011, 11:52 pm

After I got home from school today, I heard a very load noise outside, so I opened the door to see what was going on, this noise was very very loud, I took my camera and recorded the sound. Is this frogs? The temps here are in the 30's now, shouldn't frogs be in hibernation? I tried to get closer, and they had to be at least 50 feet away but as soon as I stepped off the deck, they stopped and never made any more sounds.

There's no mistaking that sound: those are snipes. But why they are mating during daylight hours is beyond me. That's really odd.

I looked up woozles and snipes since I didn't know what either one was Smile

I found a sound recording for the snipe, and it sounded something like what I heard. Are they real loud boffer? Cause this was really really loud.

I don't think it was a woozle though.

It was so loud it was almost scarry...I thought it was maybe one of those "PREDATORS" you know like in the movie....I couldn't see anything...only hear it. Shocked

Funny, guys.

I actually never heard anything identifiable. I suppose I'm deaf, though.

Nope...not woozles or nargles or snipes, they're definitely iculoraredlacs. We had an infestation of them one year and they scared the bejessus out of me, too.

Hey Josh, was it really cold with a slight breeze that day? It actually just sounds like the trees to me.

I could hear all those sounds Josh.
There is often weird sounding stuff that comes from the direction of the neighbors pond affraid but not in mid December. I would have gone back inside pretty quickly because, what creepy thing is gonna bite me!

I know my climate is much different from yours, Josh, but I still hear frogs croaking in the wet weather pond about 100 feet from my home. I am sorry I don't know what variety they are. I also have at least two Pacific Chorus Frogs (what I always referred to as a tree frog) chirping on my semi enclosed porch.

Here are pictures of the Pacific Chorus Frog from earlier this year. I love the first one of two frogs in a large rose bud.

Both pictures were taken during July, 2011. This is on lilac leaves.

Sorry, I don't know why part of the url is showing on the post.

OK...I have googled all of your suggestions on what it is and you know when you google something you get all kinds of things and there has been some really interesting things come up, however I don't think any of them are what's making the sound.

Lucy, your answer is amazing, I got 0 results for it and google always finds something on everything!

Take another listen to it, and listen to the birds in the background chirpping, they are just a few feet from me, the "mystery sound" is actually 50 feet away from me, and there is two of them and they are 100 feet apart from each other, just going by where the sounds are coming from.

Furbalsmom, I think your right that they are frogs, and very big ones.
Your Pic are AWESOME!!!
