My soup and salad garden plan

Post  B maier on 12/20/2011, 3:41 am

My plan has 9 squares lined up against a chain link fence on the north side. Both the cukes and the tomatos are free to spread out at the sides. My planting schedule is:

Mid Feb - start tomatoes indoors

Mid Mar - plant tomatoes, parsnips, carrots and onions. start cukes and lettuce indoors.

Mid April - plant cukes, lettuce and potatoes.

I'm currently researching the best varieties to use... I want full size tomatos and both pickling and slicing cukes. I also prefer sweeter veggies. Any recommendation and comments welcome.

Welcome! We have quite the flurry of activity from new folks from Ohio.

Regarding wanting sweeter veggies - specifically with tomatoes, what sizes are you looking for?

I also love your garden design!

Lovely box design with the built in deeper area for longer rooted veggies. Some of your current planned veggies don't need that depth, but it will be nice for you to have for later plantings and the ability to rotate.

Are you really able to plant tomatoes outside in March? That makes me very jealous.

Please keep us updated on your progress. Looking forward to hearing more.

Again, Welcome.

Welcome from the southwest corner of Ohio. I love your design and plan but planting tomatoes in March is a little risky in our neck of the woods. There is that thing about being North of I-70, the weather is always worse than mine and March is when I start my tomatoes indoors. could you hold off til late April?

Well the planting dates are not set in stone so if it is too cold I can just keep them indoors longer or start extras (I can always sneak onto a neighborhood empty lot and plant them there, lol... might do that anyway)

As for the demensions of the boxes I am planning making 3 of them so I can move them around easier in later years. Like a sectional sofa. (I can take the dirt out at this time)

Pictures in next post

I plan on painting them a nice deep green.

that's really neat design. As for making your veggies sweeter, pull your carrots out while they are young and not full size, they are so much better than full grown.

Poser 4 (The current version is called poser debut)

I've used it for years... my pitures of these boxes doesn't do the program justice.
