Mel will be speaking on January 11, 2012

Post  camprn on 12/27/2011, 6:35 am

This just came across my Facebook page:
DATE: JANUARY 11, 2012
TIME: 7:30PM
WHERE: Casa Del Prado, Majorca Room (101), Balboa Park

If you live in the San Diego area, this is a chance to hear Mel give
one of his SFG lectures and demonstrations on Wed night Jan 11th at 7 pm
. This is at a meeting of the EPIPHYLLUM SOCIETY , so Mel will cover
the history of SFG as well as all of the latest activities.

Of
particular interest will be his description of a new program in San
Diego with the St. Vincent de Paul Village on feeding the homeless - but
from their own gardens. This is a trial operation and will parallel a
similar program the SFG Foundation has set up with the city of Columbia,
South Carolina. This is an excellent example of teaching a man to fish
rather than giving him a fish. Your support and involvement would be
greatly appreciated if you agree with that philosophy.

This is
the only speaking date that Mel has on the west coast this coming year,
so it might be worth a long drive, no matter where you live.

I am curious who went. There was certainly quite a crowd. It was sponsored by the Epiphyllum Society (a cactus that needs water and shade and has beautiful flowers that bloom at night) and I was there early enough to catch their talk/slide show about growing epis from seed which, although tedious, was a good lesson on how to get small seeds extracted from a pulpy fruit. We then moved to the big room which was quite full.

I finally bought the ANSFG book - I had been using this forum and a library copy for my needs but now I have a signed book so very exciting. I learned a bit and found out that Mel is in San Diego for a sabbatical and is starting a number of local projects, including working with St Vincent de Paul (the center, not the actual saint) and the city - he is attempting to have some SFGs included on a rooftop garden in the new convention center. They are looking for volunteers. He also mentioned that the Cash from SFG book will be coming out soon. Or maybe it already is? Either way, cannot wait to see it.

Glad I went. It was worthwhile.

Mel green with envy while showing a local SFG broccoli:

And I almost forgot! He said they may do a three day symposium in San Diego also. Great opportunity for those of us here and those who need a vacation. Smile

golly gee whiz Is that just one head of broccoli? I've never seen one that big.

I see that Mel has put on a little weight during his sabbatical. I hope he changes his recommendations for how many squares a person needs for their annual veggie consumption 'cause I think he used to eat like a bird, and I would starve to death following his guidelines! who?me?

That is one head of broccoli. They cut it up and put it on the treat table.

I doubt Mel gained weight. He seemed pretty darn thin but my photo skills on the other hand... And everyone knows that green adds 10 pounds.
