Re: Our Newest Regional Hosts!

Post  Kelejan on 2/25/2015, 2:10 am

I just noticed this thread so a big welcome to me, Kelejan, as the
REGIONAL HOST FOR CANADA.
My husband always said I did not blow my own trumpet enough, so I am finally taking notice of him. Very Happy

I am a bit late in announcing myself as I started on January 1, 2015 after having my arm twisted off by sanderson.

In a hours time from now I will be a year older, so I am finally admitting my age.
But I still have to go to bed as I am getting sleepy.
I usually start celebrating at 4pm local time as I was born in England so I give myself a 32-hour birthday. Had a nice meal tonight with friends, then lunch tomorrow with more friends and that usually means two birthday cakes.  In England I only had one.

Kelejan, As one of our newest RHs, you sure have a lot of new Canadian members!  You are not alone up there anymore!

I think it is important to have the RH positions filled. A new person browsing our site, seeing a Regional Host in their area, will know they are not alone. That there are others gardening under somewhat similar conditions.

We thank all of you who volunteer your time. Sanderson

Re: Our Newest Regional Hosts!

Post  Kelejan on 5/28/2015, 11:39 am

Thanks for the kudos, that is very encouraging.

Fellow SFGers, when I was first asked about being a Regional Host(ess) my first reaction was ""No way", I don't know enough; I haven't time: I would make a mess of things: I would make an idiot of myself;  etc., etc.

Then I thought some more about it. This Forum has already given me quite a bit of knowledge and I did know that I had even answered some newbie questions myself, knowing I had given the right answer and the first time that happened I felt so good.

That people logging on to this site and making their first post took me back to when I started, and the encouragement I received that kept me coming back.

This is a great group of people, ready to help anyone; in fact, we fall over ourselves at times doing our best to get others on board this great way of gardening.

No one has ever to be ashamed of not knowing the simplest things and being afraid of being laughed at or looked down on.

Anyway, I gave myself time, nearly a month I think, then put my start date at January 1, 2015, did some reading and searching and seeing what others RHs had done and figured let's go and see what happens.

You know what, I am enjoying it.  I do lack specialized knowledge and maybe I am in awe of some folks, but hey, they can't bite me, Very Happy  they just supply the knowledge I do not have, so I am learning along the way.

So why not give it try, you might find that it becomes a part of your life? I am grateful for the ongoing support I receive from sanderson, camprn, and just about everyone else; thank you.  I couldn't do it without you.

What I would like is for Canada to be divided, gardening wise.  I know that sounds wrong, but we all know that the land mass is so huge that people in the East live in a far different weather system than I do in the West, that I can only feel for them with the harsh winters they have to endure.

If we can  have more Regional Hosts, that would be great as a Region concentrates gardeners with similar growing conditions at the same time. We can still tease each other with "what I am producing now when your stuff is still frozen solid".

I guess that's enough for now.  I hope I haven't frightened anyone off. BIG hug

Post  momvet on 5/28/2015, 12:01 pm

Congratulations on your new hosting position! I am really surprised that Southern California doesn't have a host, being that we can garden year round. Maybe we are all too busy in our gardens Razz ! I am a total newbie and don't know much, but I have learned everything I know about SFG here. Sometimes there are question that are specific to our region that I am dying to know For example, a lot of things that get planted in the spring elsewhere (kale, spinach, peas and more) are supposed to be planted in the fall. I don't know when to stop planting radishes and carrots. Just examples. Anyway, congrats again!

momvet, I hope you get your own Regional Host soon.  Especially when I think California has a similar number of people as all of Canada but its own problem of drought etc.

Kelejan, Thank you for putting yourself out there and providing this valuable service to the forum. In this day and age, I'm sure there are many other things you could be doing with your time. I just wanted you to know that I appreciate all that you and the other Regional Hosts do for our little corner of the Internet. Very Happy

And I really thank you for stepping up to co host with me, especially this summer.  Moving is a Witch.

I also want to encourage anyone who loves gardening and has a bit of time to consider being a host.  Once you have the system down, you are ready to encourage others which is half the battle on keeping the forum active.  And if you don't know an answer then another forum member might or can find it out.

I am pleased to introduce our newest Regional Host - Rosina of Hawaii!   you rock  Thank you so much for answering the call and volunteering!

I like seeing the number of RHs increasing.  When a Region has a Host, I think people are more willing to join.

Awesome!  Thanks for stepping up, Rosina!

I lived in Hawaii for a year of jr. high, high school, and a couple years of college, and tried to garden there a bit.  It brings back memories when I read your posts about growing in Hawaii.

Spread the knowledge around, and I hope you have better luck with strawberries than I did!

glad you\'re here rosina  happy hi as Regional Host for Hawaii.  (I have finally managed to spell it correctly first time Smile )

I am sure that it took you some time to commit to being a RH.  I took me about a month to make up my mind and it was with much trepidation that I took the plunge the first day of this year.

Now I find that I look forward every day to seeing what is posted on my region and I am really enjoying it.  I have also learned that one does not have to be a encyclopeida of gardening knowledge.  I think the main thing is to just be here, ready to keep the conversation going. As RHs we have great support and encouragement  from Camprn, Sanderson, and everyone else, including the posters themselves.

Thanks for stepping up to support the forum.

Now that you can't claim noobie status anymore, perhaps it's time to get an avatar! Wink

Here's a possibility.

Seeing this brought back childhood memories of my cousin who, living on Oahu, called our grandma TuTu.  All us stateside cousins thought that was the funniest thing, but in hindsight, it was endearing at the same time.

Regional hosts

Post  kauairosina on 6/12/2015, 7:01 pm

Of course, I tear easily, but those messages about Regional Hosts really got to  me.  I especially like the Tutu's garden sign, "violators will be given chores."  That is really the way it is except it isn't just my garden and we are all part of this team on Kauai but some of us just have more time that we can spend in our glorious gardens.  .
