Spiral Bound my ANSFG book!

Post  sfg4uKim on Tue Jan 03, 2012 3:32 pm

This has been great for ME, but I thought some of you might be interested. I had my All New Square Foot Gardening book spiral bound for $6.44 (+ tax) at Staples.

As you can see, you lose a little of the text, but it's really not that bad.

What a great idea! With frequent use this will probably last longer than regular binding, but the pages should lay flat, which looks like a big PLUS.

Kim, what a great idea! One of my biggest grips is the way the text is lined up in the book. For me it goes way to deep into the center/binding part of the book, making it somewhat difficult to read. So then what I end up doing is smashing the book out, loosening all the pages Sad
I might have go have this done! I am really liking the looks of it!

I wish I had shopped local actually, I really need to find a mom and pop business shop. That is one of our goals, shop local as much as possible. But today I thought gosh that would help me a lot with reading ANSFG over and over like I need to. I am so excited with how well it came out and easy to use now!
Again thank you for the great idea

Maybe try a local business, see if they do it too? I was of course in a hurry so I didnt take the time to "google" a shop.

Re: Spiral Bound my ANSFG book!

Post  sfg4uKim on Wed Jan 04, 2012 7:33 am

Just wanted to make sure everyone knows that I didn't come up with the idea of spiral binding the book - I got the idea from Mel. His is spiral bound and he mentioned that this might be something that will be done in the future. I'm actually kicking myself for not having done it sooner.

I think the BIGGEST advantage I've found with spiral binding is that I'm able to open the book all the way on the table and more easily type passages. It's also just easier to read (again & again) without having to hold it down.

Brilliant idea to try to find a local source!

Hope this IS something they'll consider for future printings.

Oh I wish they would print it like this!! Exactly how I felt when I had the book in my had and its flat on the desk !!! I can lay it down and look at what Im doing! Now for an ebook of it and I can copy and paste!! lol. I feel like I got some new sort of toy with it Smile Very slick. I just sent home two copies with folks, I am going to give them gift certificates I think to get their books done. Anything to make the garden experience fun and easy.

Also on the Nook color for the same price Very Happy

I have offered it before, but if anyone else here has a Nook, I can "lend" you the book for 14 days I believe. Let me know...

It's a great resource!

And Kim, again, thanks for the great idea of the spiral binding! I love it! Cool

A lot of folks, if given the choice, would choose the spiral bound version. If I knew one was available, I'd buy another copy and leave this one alone.

I just hope in the future that folks buy the book that has all the info and not the trimmed down version for a cheaper price.

Still waiting on the digital version of the books.

Re: Spiral Bound my ANSFG book!

Post  llama momma on Wed Jan 04, 2012 8:05 pm

I was thinking what I could use around the house, especially to protect the pages when I'm outside with the book and it rains, or my hands are dirty. Turns out I had plastic page protectors from an old school project. So I went to my favorite local printer and in about 2 minutes he took the spline off the book and charged 75 cents for it. Back home I spent at least an hour and 1/2 putting every page in a page protector.

Pro's and cons: Pro's I can take a few pages or the whole binder outside. I can add my own garden notes right with the pages, it can rain on the book, get touched by muddy hands and I won't hear those bad words come out of my mouth.
Cons: now the book weighs a lot more with the binder and all those plastic pages, over 2 pounds. Overall, I love it.

If you buy the plastic protective pages be sure to get the ones I used in the picture. You don't hole-punch the book pages. Each book page slips inside the plastic page, the binder holes are seemed-in and don't even touch the book pages. Think you can tell better from the picture.

And do yourself a long-term favor and get the acid-free sheet protectors like llama momma used. That way you don't have to worry about the books pages degrading over time. It's definitely worth the few extra pennies!
