Thanks for the idea! I just got back from Staples after having my book converted. They did a great job. I actually had three other books converted as well.

I wanted to have tabs made for each of the chapters; however, the book pages are not large enough. Typically pages need to be the usual 8.5" X 11". Wish it did not cost so much to laminate each page. That would have been a great way to protect the book as well.

It is just like looking at a new book again. I love you

I went and had my new sfg book done later yesterday. Only cost $1.70 for that one, I am gonna ask how they figure the rate lol..

Anyway, had both the ladies asking questions then. One has a dad in an apt complex with a small area (from the sounds of it 2x6). He is getting so he can't do the hoeing, ect. So she is gonna buy the book for him. Told her to let me know if he had questions.

The fun of a small town-if she don't get it for him, I will rofl...

AWESOME IDEAS!

Post  kristinz on 5/20/2013, 9:16 am

Like everyone else, my book is being smashed open! I am torn between doing the spiral version or the binder version with the page protectors. I definitely take mine outside often and could also put in my own tabs for easy reference.... but the spiral version seems more convenient and 'neater' in a way. Thank you all for sharing your ideas! This forum just gets better every time I visit!

I too like the idea of the binder, but I've found that with the spiral version you can of course flip it all the way around and it takes up less space on the table. This has come in handy when I teach where space is at a premium (like the Home & Garden Show). Speaking of "tabbing", as you can see below I just used those "sign here" type of sticky notes. They've lasted through a LOT of use and abuse since I put them there in early March.

Ok, so I took my book to Staples today, and the guy didn't seem to want to bind my book... He was reluctant because he said I am altering the actual book and it might not be legal... he said he will still do it, and it will be done by tomorrow. Did anyone else come across this? I figured since I wasn't copying it, there wouldn't be any issues.

I dealt with the owner of the print shop and can tell you he had no problem with doing it. Had no comment other than he thought the book looked interesting.

It's your book. If he had questioned me more than twice I would have asked for the manager.

He just doesn't know it's ok and is probably being cautious.

Considering I got the idea because Mel himself had his copy spiral bound . . . I think it's legal and that guy is just silly. tongue

I have books bound all the time with spirals or combs (I am very hard on books and basically everything around me) and have NEVER had anyone ask or have an issue with it. Usually they just look at the title of the book and ask me questions about the book's contents!

If it was illegal due to "altering" then it would be illegal to make notes or mark it up! Once you own the book, as long as it is not copying, then it is yours to do with as you wish.

Funny thing, I did tell him I found out about binding the book through this website, well, it's done now! So I'm going to pick it up...one night without it was long enough... I wanted to look some thing up last night and went to get the book...ooops! I have a couple other books I want to do this too also, maybe I will just go to another store.

I had a few books spiral bound and found they don't last.
Now I enclose them in plastic page protectors, insert them in a loose leaf binder.
They will last a long time, this has worked for me.

That's what I did last year JimmyC, the pages remain pristine and looks like it will easily outlast me.

Mine seem to last pretty well, but I do have the covers laminated for extra strength. In our little town you can only get them done with the combs instead of the spirals, so the paper pieces between the combs are larger than between spirals. I like the look of the spirals better, but the combs seem to last me longer.
