Pas un poisson -- No April Fish!

Post  LaFee on 4/1/2010, 5:10 am

Hi to all those in Europe ---

Since it's the beginning of a new month, can we have a roll call to see who is still posting, and what's growing where?

We had a light frost this morning, so I'm quite glad that I've been behind schedule in putting out my tiny sprouts -- they'd be gone, for sure! I'm still working on lettuce, tomatoes, basil, green peppers, jalapeno peppers, and some flowers for the boxes around our house.

Hopefully it will get warm again soon -- the tulips are finally sending up the flower buds, and the daffodils (jonquils) and hyacinths are in full glory. The ornamental cherry trees are just a few days short of their full glory, and the magnolias (genets) will be open any day now.

Just some administrative -- my intention for all those with a language-specific forum (like you folks in the Netherlands) -- that I might read over your shoulders with a translator just in case there's a question I can answer, and to make sure things stay family friendly and without any ads and things. Other than that, I have no plans to interrupt discussions in other languages.

Hope everyone's plants are off to a good start...post back and tell us what you've been doing!

Hi Lafee

great idea to have a monthly update. Over here in the north of Holland we've had some pretty good days, with temperatures up to 18 Celsius even (okay, only once, but still...), but at the moment the wheather is terrible. I've seen hail, heavy rains and even snow today. All combined with a stormy cold wind, so it's like november here. Frost is expected tonight and tomorrow night, so I've re-set up my fleececovers for now.

I have broad beans, sugar snaps, peas, broccoli, spinach, 3 kinds of lettuce, spinach, swiss chard growing, i.e. those are recognisable plants. Seacress, springonions, turnips, yellow beets and radishes have sprouted, and I'm still waiting to see the first of the carrots (orange/purple), shizo and chioggia beets coming up. Oh, and the parsnips ofcourse, but they're supposed to be slow. I have all my potatoes planted in baskets, and a lot of strawberrys in pots.
Inside, tomatoes, basil and peppers are doing fine. Oh, and i've sowed some more purple cauliflower, as only one of my first seedlings survived (waiting to be planted out in the cold frame). Actually, I'm pretty happy with my garden so far

the other plants (non edibles) are coming alive also, lots of young green and a little colour all around. Even if the wheather doesn't agree, spring has come!

Then you're getting what we had Monday and Tuesday...today it cleared off and was really nice, with lots of sun, but still only about 10 today.

I hope the nice weather follows to you, too!

I hope for better times too, but the forecast says we'll have this wheater for 4 or 5 more days... maybe some sun tomorrow, but later on more rain and wind and low temperatures...oh well, we'll survive, it's just that we were spoiled having such beuatiful days last week... I'll just keep in mind that summer will come, eventually.
