Mid-Atl: Anyone growing indoors?

My indoor growing isn't going really well, but at least I'm getting SOMETHING.

Anyone else in the Mid-Atlantic area growing indoors? If so, let's see!

Here is some lettuce. As you can see it's pretty "leggy".


The chia sprouts are doing well.


Just for fun I threw in a few snow peas. I've only gotten 2 little pods so far . . . but they were YUMMY!

I started some seeds earlier in the week. Mostly herbs (my transplants from outdoors to inside this fall didn't work), but some broccoli too, in preparation for eventual early spring planting. The seed germination thingie I got (asked for) for Christmas is disgustingly cheap (really thin plastic), but I guess the cost was all in the heat mat. At any rate, it's doing its job in creating a little greenhouse, and I have sprouts in several of the little sections.

I planted about a month ago and am just starting to see the true leaves

Anyone growing?

I set up this past weekend and will begin with Broccoli and Cabbage on Saturday. I don't rush the dates as invariably, we get a colder than normal spell of weather. I did search out all my protective covers and various contraptions I have for such occurrences. But I don't like to push it as I don't think the plants, even if they are covered or are in a small greenhouse, do well after the colder weather. I just tend to stay conservative and figure I am getting healthier plants.

Can't wait to try out the new tomato holders that I was given for Christmas. Hard to explain but they are nothing like I have seen before. I will attempt to get some pictures on here as my previous attempts have all met with failure. No Just waiting for the new season to begin. Hard to believe it will be here pretty shortly.

Oh, cool pictures, sfg4uKim. It's funny, actually, I was just thinking about starting some lettuce inside. Like in a little planter on my window sill for fresh winter salads. I have no idea how it'll do, but it'll kind of help satisfy my gardening craving for a while, at least until I can start my seeds inside (starting at the end of next month, I think). Oh, winter is such a hard time to be a gardener!

So with a little seed starting box, should I move the sprouts out to larger jiffy pots as soon as they're sprouted? This is the first time I've tried indoor sprouting.

Yes after sprouting you can transfer them. It might not hurt to give them a day or two first before moving Very Happy


And Kim, I am still kicking the idea around of starting some chia sprouts myself. You should keep your chia thread updated Very Happy I found it really interesting!

I've had great luck growing indoors. I haven't been able to master the art of posting pictures though. I use my window boxes which I take down every fall. They're approx 3ftx4x5". I use florescent grow bulbs and 42w cfl lights that I hang from a broom handle. Arugula, red leaf romain Simpson elite and mesclun mix are doing well (my second planting this winter).

gjet, you might have better luck posting pictures after you have completed your first seven days as a member. I think there are some restrictions for members during their first week.

Here are some photos of my seeds I started last weekend and transplanted yesterday. I used spounges and am trying the vermiculite this year. Two of the transplants were from the vermiculite this year. I am using a heating pad for the first time and seeds were up in three days.

Last year was very successful growing from seeds. I still have flowers growing outside from last year(Protected of course) that I started inside. Go for it!Laughing
