Over the over-wintered hump !!

Post  staf74 on 1/14/2012, 1:06 pm

My overwintered bed has made it through an important milestone in the winter. Today is the day that my day length officially surpassed 10 hours in length. Dipping just under 10 hours to my shortest day length of 9 hrs 47 mins on the winter solstice, today however "Clocks" in at 10hrs 1 min and 56 secs. Apparently my spinach, Kale, Carrots will notice that and trigger themselves to grow increasingly faster again as if it were spring. We'll see !

If your wondering where you stand for your latitude, check this out.

P.S I have taken down the hoops now and simply using a couple of comforters to cover up. I may or may not last much longer but will post another video soon to update.

Great link, thanks! I am currently at 9h18m of sunlight... we have a ways to go here in the North East. A few more weeks and I will plant my onion & leek seed.

Aaarrrgh! We at the 48th parallel don't see that landmark for another month, on February 11.
The only thing that offsets this disappointment is that on the Solstice, we have 90 minutes more daylight than you, Graham! tongue
OTOH, we seldom get enough heat for peppers and eggplant and beefsteaks. Sad
OTOOH, I can eat peas 6 months.

kelejan, how you doin' up there?

Haha.....love it. It's really a neat tool to check out different places and compare stats isn't it.

However, day length is one thing.....temps are another. You need the combination of hardy crops, temp cooperation AND the day length to overwinter successfully. As gardeners, we sometimes embark upon outlandish schemes to thwart winter with our various hoop tunnel "thingamajigs" artificially creating this combination.

Glad you enjoyed the link Very Happy

Dec 21 only 8hr 52 min. We have to wait until Feb 5 to hit 10 hours of daylight.

But wait till June 21, we get 15 hr and 29 min. Love those long days of summer.

We started gaining seconds back on Dec 23rd, after we were at 10h 31m 09s.

We'll start losing them again on Jun 21, after topping out at 13h 45m 39s.

Definitely captures how far south we are...not as big of a change.
