That was a great article by pattipan.

I bought some celery seeds. I thought I was going to sow seeds next week but..... Didn't know anything about celery until Now.

So disappointing that I have to wait until July= ish to sow my seeds.

I did that last year !!! bought seeds and then read the package Smile lololol So I have 9 celery seeds that have sprouted out of 12 in the big hoop house Smile they are the tiniest cutest ever seedlings. :-D I will let you know how they do. Red Giant Celery, I was talking to a friend in Jura, Scotland and he said his red giant celery is a good one and he has grown it to five foot tall !!!! I will be asking him more as we go. He is also the guy with some of the oldest variety of potatoes, from back before time began it sounded like Smile Well maybe before Jura time Smile Sure would like some of those seed potatoes. Try the celery in the house? See how far it would get Smile Im always experimenting. I also saw an article where someone took their remaining celery root from store bought stalks, put it in a flat dish of water.. then put it in a pot with soil on it and it grew!! Anywho Smile Im excited to try the celery this year Smile

Ummm....with a 5' celery, how long are the stalks? Can you imagine carrying in and cutting up a 3' stalk? It would take a whole jar of peanut butter to fill it! Laughing

Scotland's home to a lot of great things. Hope you can get some seeds!

I was having a look at Diggers the other day and from what I can tell they ship a lot of things overseas so if you really wanted the Aussie stuff I'd check out their site, www.diggers.com.au

wow. 5ft celery. You have my attention Ha-v-v. Where did you get the Red Giant Celery seed?
and lol! @ Ava. I am wondering if he covered the stalks as it grew up 5 ft tall. Shocked

I want some Lovage.---I know it's not celery but has the aroma of celery...not sure if it has a hint flavor of celery but also good medicinal. I am still learning about this one.

Ha-v-v , are you saying I should be able to start my seed now? Indoors, and not have problems with the heat later on?

Re: anyone grow celery out there?

I'm so confused! My head swims when I read this thread!

I bought a pony pak of celery. It didn't say if they were self-blanching or not. I put 4 in a SF...per Mel. He didn't say anything about trenching or extra depth. They like water...fine. They are surrounded by snapdragons, and (will be) daisies and cosmos...per WIKIpedia companion planting.

I watched info on youtube, and no one said anything about blanching or trenches. Somewhere I picked up that cutting the bottom and top off a cardboard 1/2 gal box of juice makes a great 'wrapper' for them. Are we protecting them from heat? Bugs? Or just controlling their growth to upward and not outward?

My plants are getting bigger. I noticed another gardener has HUGE wide celery plants. They would take up a SF each! (The rookie topic is very helpful to understand blanching)

I started some seeds too, for succession planting, but haven't seen anything yet. I think they are Utah Tall.

Reading Pattipan's rookie topic, I'm wondering when I should start removing some outer stalks. I'm not sure I even have stalks yet!

I'm also wondering if I need to re-work my trellised box so I can hid more than just a row of spinach and lettuces in the shade.

I took a look at my fellow plotter's celery tonight. They are very bushy, maybe 2' tall with leaves, but the stalks are maybe 6-9". I can tell he has removed one recently - he left the root ball and it was very matted.

I looked at mine, and I have no stalks. Mine just look like the tops of the celery, and the plants are about 9" tall.

I put a hot hat on over the seeds tonight. The seeds have been in the ground a little more than 2 weeks and there is no action. The Tall Utah seed pkg said it could be 30 days.

Fingers crossed...

could your fellow plotter be growing Celeriac?

it looks like celery on the top but it has a knoted looking ball root thing on the bottom.....i learned about Celeriac from Lav debs here....if you go to the PNW forum you will find her thread called the *toy box* on the third page she posts a pic and talks about cooking with it.....

this is something new we are going to try and grow this year Very Happy

Well....I met the guy growing celery, and it was indeed celery. He raved about how good it was, and told me mine is done.

We had just bought a head, so I set up a blanch for mine, after trying a stalk (it tasted quite strong to me). In two weeks it should be ready to harvest.

(Blanching cuts off the sun from reaching the stalks, which decreases the chloroform and the green color...which makes celery flavor more mild.)

Several others have tried a stalk from the unblanched plants, and they say it is quite good.

I dunno...it's tall but the stalks are rather thin and delicate. I hope it gets taller (and wider) in the next two weeks! It's a lot of leafy stuff on top...probably as tall as the stalk itself.
