Anybody know what this is? From a restaurant...

This 'thing' came out of the kitchen of a pizza joint that was up for auction. My instant first thought was: ooooh, now that's a salad spinner! But I really don't know what it is. It's not greasy or dented. It's stainless. The tub/holder of the drum doesn't have any drain holes in it. The drum is 10 inches in diameter, 12 inches high. Ideas?

I worked in more than a couple kitchens paying my way through school and I do not recognize it. I would have to agree with the above post though. If it looks like it could take a heat source under the base I would say some sort of roaster.

OOPS! I deleted my post... I said that I think it resembles a chile roaster, though that was far larger. I think maybe this could be for small batches. Is there any evidence of heat on the box?

could it be the innards of an iced tea dispenser? looks like tea leaves could go in center, hot water over it. . .

am i close?

it's obviously a diffuser ??? of some sort though. .. where contents are in it, liquid goes thru it . . .

i really haven't a clue. just looks like an over sized tea ball to me, though. i love tea!

just reread your post.

pizza place.

makes me think of cheese.

could it be that you put blocks of cheese on it and it grates it INTO the container? is the grating rough - sharp that would go along with that thinking?

i am thinking hard cheese - parmesan/romano tha tkind of thing. soft cheeses would just get mushy and slime up the sides faster.

so am i closer? that would also go along with teh turning handle.

I eat at an Italian Pizza joint from time to time, and when you go to pay your tab they have a jar with about 100 numbered balls in it. You guess a number they shake it up and draw out a ball. If your number matches your meal is free. Maybe they used this for such a purpose.

I'm wondering if it's some type of professional cheese grater....Place a block of cheese on top and start cranking, allowing for the cheese to fill the spinning container until full, then remove the cylinder, and empty the cheese....

Do a Google image search for "Bamboo or French Cheese Grater" and you'll see something similar in design...Not the same, but close...

Well done. Although the obvious is missing. Evidence that it was even used. So perhaps one of three things happened; they went out of business before it could be used, it was used once or twice and cleaned right away or it was used for something else. The things in life that make you go hmmmmmm.

There is a magazine called "Cook's Illustrated." Every issue they feature a gadget that someone has sent in a picture of and they explain what it is (ie - found this in my grandma's attic...what is it!). So maybe you could submit a picture to them for final confirmation?!

Wouldn't that be kinda uncomfortable? I mean all that metal with corners and such... or are they putting it under the pillows?

Maybe.................this is just the top half? That there's a lower heating unit that it sits on?
